The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were relatively unchanged on Friday, yet managed to close at all-time highs.
Trading was muted in today’s session, mainly due to the Memorial Day holiday. It was the lowest volume of 2017, Dow Jones said today. Only 5.2 billion shares exchanged hands. The S&P 500 index SPX gained 0.75 point, or less than 0.1 percent, to finish at a fresh all-time high at 2014.82. Consumer staples led the gains today. Consumer discretionary and materials also did well. On the other hand, real estate stocks fell.
Meanwhile the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 4.94 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 6,210.19.
Shares of Nutanix were up 11.5 percent after posting better-than-expected earnings on Thursday.
