Qatargas Recognized as Energy Conservation Leader

Doha – Business Class

Qatargas, the World’s Premier LNG Company, recently received two prestigious awards for energy and water conservation. The Company was recognized by the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), an annual initiative of Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa). The awards were presented in recognition of Qatargas’ commitment to environmental stewardship, and specifically, for wide-ranging energy conservation achievements at its Common Liquefied Petroleum Gas (CLPG) plant (Industrial Buildings Category), and at the Company’s Doha Head Office (Commercial Buildings Category).

During the awards ceremony, held under the patronage of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at the Kahramaa Awareness Park, senior Qatargas officials received the awards from His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister. Also present on the occasion were His Excellency Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Essa bin Hilal Al-Kuwari, Kahramaa President and other dignitaries. Ghanim Mohammed Al Kuwari, Qatargas Chief Operating Officer – Administration, received the award for the Commercial Buildings category while Ahmed Helal Al Mohannadi, Qatargas Chief Operating Officer – Operations, received the award for the Industrial Buildings category.

The Common LPG storage facility, located in Ras Laffan and operated by Qatargas, made considerable power savings resulting from various process optimisation initiatives executed by the Terminal Operations team. These initiatives were designed to deliver a reduction in facility power consumption whilst still maintaining agreed product specifications. Most notably, electricity consumption fell from 26 kilo watt-hour (kwh) per cubic metre in 2014 to 21 kwh per cubic metre in 2016, registering more than 20% reduction which is remarkable given the 12% increase in LPG storage and loading activities over the same period.

At its Doha Head Office, Qatargas made several system modifications and used high quality products to conserve energy. These included modifications on floors and interior walls, the introduction of superior quality heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, lighting sensors, lighting management systems, and state-of-the-art passenger lifts that use less electricity whilst meeting world-class technical standards.
