As part of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route project, the Public Works Authority, ‘Ashghal’, has announced the partial opening of the 14km linking road from Hamad Port Road to Doha via the G-Ring Road and Industrial Area to include four northbound lanes from Hamad Port to the Industrial Area.
Only the four northbound lanes from Hamad Port to Industrial area were opened, while the southbound lanes are still underway to be completed soon, said a statement.
Ashghal was keen on accelerating work to come to a close before deadline since the new route forms a direct connection between Hamad Port and Industrial Area, enhancing goods and materials movement.
Hamad Port Road will provide road users with a shortcut route to the Industrial Area than Al Kharrara Road and Al Wakra Road and is expected to reduce travel times between Hamad Port and the Industrial Area by more than 15 percent.
The new road extends from Mesaieed Road to East Industrial Street, and combined with the recently opened underpass on East Street 33 Interchange (formerly Al Watan Roundabout), it will establish an almost entirely free-flowing connection between Hamad Port and Salwa Road.
At this stage, road users will have access to four northbound lanes on Hamad Port Road, with four southbound lanes expected to be complete and open for public use within the next two months. Ashghal is currently constructing three free-flowing interchanges on Hamad Port Road. Once fully complete, the interchanges will enhance connectivity from the new highway to local towns, such as Wukair, and other expressways in the area, including the recently opened G Ring Road, East Industrial Street and Industrial Area Road.
Ashghal’s Manager of Expressway Department, Eng. Youssef Al Emadi, said that Ashghal expedited the constructions of linking road from Hamad Port Road to Doha via the G-Ring Road and Industrial Area thanks to the progressive significance of the hub, provide further relief to the people of Al Wakra and Wukair and will enable Qatari businesses to more effectively transport goods and materials from the south of the country to Doha.
“The linking road from Hamad Port Road to Doha via the G-Ring Road and Industrial Area will help to relieve congestion on Al Kharrara Road and Al Wakra Road, and improve the flow of traffic and goods in the south of Qatar,” said Eng. Darwish.
“Construction works on the Al Wakra Bypass and the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route are progressing ahead of schedule, and Ashghal expects to open key sections of these two expressways within the next weeks.”
Hamad Port Road forms a major component of the construction work that are being implemented as part of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route.
Upon completion, the New Orbital Highway will reduce the travel time between Mesaieed and Al Khor by more than one hour, enabling heavy goods vehicles to travel efficiently between Hamad Port and Mesaieed in the south to Al Khor in the north, as well as other key business and residential hubs, such as the Industrial Area, Salwa Road, Al Rayyan and Lusail, without the need to travel through Doha.
